Stay Vigilant Against Imposter Scams
Scammers are increasingly targeting property managers and tenants by posing as legitimate property management companies or applicants. These fraudsters may contact you unexpectedly, claiming suspicious activity on your account or requesting sensitive information. Protect yourself by staying informed and cautious.
How to Spot a Scam
- Unsolicited Contact: Be wary of unexpected calls, texts, or emails from individuals claiming to represent your property management company.
- Requests for Sensitive Information: Legitimate companies will never ask you to share login credentials, financial details, or personal information via unsolicited communication.
- Suspicious Requests: Scammers may ask you to set up call or text forwarding or provide verification codes—requests we will never make.
- Urgent or Threatening Language: Fraudsters often create a sense of urgency to pressure you into acting quickly without verifying their identity.
How to Protect Yourself
- Never Share Sensitive Information: Do not provide login credentials, banking details, or personal information to anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.
- Verify Directly: If you receive a suspicious message, hang up or disregard it and contact your property management company directly using a verified phone number, such as (800) 927-0288, or a number listed on your official lease agreement or property management website.
- Report Immediately: If you encounter a suspicious call, text, or email, report it to your property management company as soon as possible.
- Secure Your Accounts: Use strong, unique passwords and enable two-factor authentication (2FA) where available to protect your accounts.
What to Do If You’re Targeted
- Do Not Engage: Avoid responding to suspicious messages or clicking on any links provided.
- Document the Interaction: Save screenshots or records of the communication for evidence.
- Contact Authorities: Report the scam to your property management company and local authorities, or file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at www.ftc.gov.
